A police inspector, Idris Musa, has died of wounds he sustained following a gun battle with some Boko Haram members in Kano state.
The death of the police officer was announced on Monday night, July 24, in a statement by the force public relations officer, CSP Jimoh Moshood, Daily Trust reports.
According to the statement: "Inspector Idris Musa eventually died at about 0100hrs of 24th July, 2017 from injury he and two other police officers sustained when they came under attack or remnant of Boko Haram insurgents who were moving to attack public centers, places or worship and other locations in Kano metropolis in the early hours of July 23rd, 2017.
"The Boko Haram remnant insurgents attacked the Special Police Team with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and Fire arms. The Team repelled the attack and in the process three Boko Haram insurgents sustained serious bullet wound injuries and three Police Officers equally wounded. The Special Police Team successfully PREVENTED the Boko Haram insurgents from carrying out their planned attacks on selected targets in Kano metropolis on the fateful date.
The police spokesperson stated that Idris Musa was a member of the joint police special team set up by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) track and Share Boko Haram ruminants from regrouping and launching attacks in other northern states
Some 24repoters.com recalls that officers of the Nigerian Police Force and some Boko Haram members had engaged in a gun battle in Kano state.
Premium Times reports that at the end of battle which ensued on Sunday morning, July 23, three of the suspects were arrested, as well as two women suspected to be spouses of the suspects
Disclosing how the insurgents were tracked, the Kano state commissioner of police, Rabiu Yusuf, said the police had been gathering intelligence on the suspects for a while.
He said the gun fight ensued at about 2am on Sunday, July 22, at Gaya in Ungogo Local Government Area of the state.
Yusuf stated that the insurgents who Battled the police were among the Boko Haram members who escaped from Sambisa forest in Borno when the military took over most part of the group's former stronghold.
He said two members of the group who were arrested earlier, led officers to Gaya, where the gun fight occurred.
The commissioner said the leader of the terror cell was dismissed a military officer who was training other people.
He said the suspect threw an improvised explosive device (IED) at the police and started to shoot before the police fought back.
He however noted that the leader of the group escaped during the heat of battle.
In a related news, the FCT police command on Friday, July 23, arrested the second in command of a unit in Islamist group, Boko Haram, at Gwako village in Abuja.
According to Vanguard, the suspect, 20-year-old Seth Yakubu hails from Obi Local Government Area in Nasarawa state.
