- Senate has lambasted Charley Boy and #OurMumuDonDo protesters over demand for Buhari’s resignation

- Buhari had on May 7 left Nigeria for London on medical trip of undisclosed ailment

- The Senate said has not violated any law since Buhari handed over to Osinbajo as demanded by the constitution

The Senate on Wednesday August 9 took a swipe at a group of protesters who stormed the nation’s Capital, Abuja, demanding for the immediate return of President Muhammadu Buhari to the country, saying that such persons should leave Buhari alone as he has not violated any law of the land.

Vanguard reports that the Senate said the demands by the protesters were unreasonable, saying that they were only creating what it termed, unnecessary tension in the country and seeking to divert the attention of the Presidency from the economic and security issues which are being tackled with vigour.

24repoters.com  gathered that in a statement yesterday in Abuja by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate particularly warned the sponsors and participants in the protests by a coalition of civil society organizations, operating under the aegis of #OurMumuDonDo, and demanding for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari over his medical vacation in the United Kingdom to stop heating up the polity.

According to the Senate, President Buhari had complied with the provisions of the nation’s ground norm, the Constitution, which stipulated that he must handover to the Vice President and duly inform the two chambers of the legislature about his medical vacation.

It would be recalled that Buhari has been in London for almost three months where he is receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment. Senator Abdullahi said, “The President has broken no law and therefore we do not see any justification for this diversion and noise making.

"The sponsors are merely seeking cheap publicity at the expense of the peace of Nigeria. We, in the National Assembly, are satisfied that there is no vacuum.

The Federal Government is working. Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is providing the required leadership. So, there is no reason for the protests.

“All Nigerians now should focus on praying for the safe return of the President. We in the Senate are happy about the report by the Governors and party leaders who recently visited President Buhari in London and we know he will soon return to continue to provide leadership to our people and the rest of Africa.

“We therefore call on the protesters to stop all these demonstrations and let their sense of patriotism overshadow the zeal for activism by joining other Nigerians to pray for the President, the acting President and Nigeria as a country at this critical period.”

It would be recalled that Charles Oputa (Charley Boy), had on Monday August 7 led a group of protesters, composed mainly of youths, to demand the immediate return of President Muhammadu Buhari to the country.

The ranks of the protesters swelled by members of civil rights activists who defied the morning rain when they marched on the National Assembly from the Unity Fountain by Shehu Shagari Way.

The protesters, who tagged themselves ‘Union of All Angry, Vexed and Frustrated Nigerians’, distributed fliers and carried a huge banner with ‘Our Mumu Don Do’ conspicuously written on it, just as some of the fliers they shared, urged members of the National Assembly to trigger Section 144 that would lead to the impeachment of the president on medical ground.

According to them, they were out to take back Nigeria so that the country can work again, just as they asked Buhari to either resume or tender his resignation, saying he cannot continue to remain in London indefinitely, adding that acting President Yemi Osinbajo was not fully in charge of the country.
