1 dead, 1 wounded in Spanish Fork after earlymorning shooting

A 19-year-old man is dead and an 18-year-old man is
wounded after an early morning shooting Friday near
Spanish Fork High School.
According to a press release from Lt. Matt Johnson with
the Spanish Fork Police Department, police officers were
dispatched at 2:22 a.m. to the school’s north parking lot
on reports of an 18-year-old with a gunshot wound.
Upon arrival at the location, they found the 18-year-old
had a minor wound to the arm.
The 18-year-old told police he and a 19-year-old male
had met at the parking lot to engage in a fight. A sizable
crowd of adults and juveniles were there as well. The
release states that when the 19-year-old arrived in a
vehicle, he brandished a .380-caliber handgun. The 18-
year-old attempted to grab the gun from him, but the
18-year-old was shot in the upper arm in the process.
As the 18-year-old and bystanders ran from the area,
the 19-year-old fired several shots into the air and fled
the scene, being driven by an unidentified female.
The 18-year-old was treated at an area hospital and
has since been released. He is cooperating with police in
the investigation.
At 4:23 a.m., officers with the Payson Police
Department located the 19-year-old’s vehicle, now being
driven by a man. A traffic stop was initiated, but the
19-year-old shot himself while seated in the vehicle. He
died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the release
states.
Police are investigating the events and will determine
whether charges should be filed against the drivers in the
incident.
Police have chosen to not release the identities of those
involved in the shooting at this time.
