In order to address emerging security threats and emergencies in the country, the Federal Government is considering the establishment of a National Guard, Vanguard reports.
The development was made public by Abdulrahman Dambazzau, the Minister of Interior, when he was paid a courtesy visit by the Adjutant-General of the California National Guard, USA, in Abuja on Thursday August 17.
The Minister disclosed that due to a number of challenges, the plan made years ago by the government to establish the National Guard, had not come into fruition.
According to the Minister, the proposed National Guard would help tackle Nigeria’s security challenges by filling the gap between the military and the police.
He disclosed that the Police was overstretched in handling such issues, while the military was becoming bogged down with its constitutional mandate of handling Nigeria’s security challenges.
Dambazzau told his visitor that Nigeria would continue to share experiences with the US Army and collaborate with the international community, in a bid to improve its security apparatus.
He further added that with the visit, the cordial relationship between Nigeria and the USA would be strengthened.
Meanwhile, 24repoters.com previously reported that Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, held a secret meeting with some top officials of the government inside the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Apart from Osinbajo, others at the closed-door meeting included the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Abayomi Olonishakin, the Chief of Army Staff General Tukur Buratai and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
